hypnognic jerk

hypnognic jerk- a sudden and strong involuntary twitch or muscle contraction, that occurs while an individual is beginning to fall asleep.

As the brain transitions from a wakeful state to sleep, it can sometimes get mixed signals, which can cause it to think someone is falling or losing balance. This can trigger the muscles to react, resulting in a hypnagogic jerk.
